Which type of pond filter do you need?

In-pond filters

In-pond filtration systems are compact units installed directly in the pond. They are well suited to smaller ponds and water features where a simple, unobtrusive system is required. Selected units combine filtration, UV clarification, a pump and a fountain display in one system.

Pressure filters

Pressure filters are sealed units that can be partly buried and positioned away from the pond. Because the filtered water remains under pressure, it can be returned to the pond or used to supply a raised waterfall. They are a popular choice for small and medium-sized fish ponds.

Flow-through filters

Flow-through filters use gravity to return filtered water to the pond and are generally suitable for larger ponds or installations with heavier fish loads. These systems provide substantial mechanical and biological filtration and must be installed at the correct height relative to the pond.

Mechanical, biological and UV filtration

An effective pond filtration system normally combines several processes:

  • Mechanical filtration captures suspended dirt, uneaten food and other debris.
  • Biological filtration provides a large surface area for beneficial bacteria that help break down harmful fish waste.
  • UV clarification helps control the free-floating algae responsible for green pond water.

A UV clarifier improves water clarity but does not replace mechanical and biological filtration. The complete system must be sized for the pond volume, fish load, water temperature and required circulation rate.

Choosing the correct pond filter size

Manufacturers’ maximum pond-volume figures usually assume favourable conditions. A koi pond, heavily stocked fish pond, shallow pond or pond in full sun may require a larger filtration system than its water volume alone suggests.

For accurate advice, calculate the pond’s volume and consider the number and type of fish, pump flow rate, pipework and intended waterfall or return arrangement.
