How to Use the Charts
- Measure the width of the waterfall or watercourse where the water flows over the edge.
- Measure the vertical lift from the pond water surface to the top of the waterfall or stream.
- Find your width and height on a chart. Hover over a coloured square, or tap it on your phone, to see the recommended pump.
Each chart applies only to the models listed in its legend. On smaller screens, some charts can be scrolled sideways to keep the labels readable.
How Much Water Flow Is Required?
A useful starting point for an average watercourse is:
Watercourse width in centimetres × 1.5 = required flow in litres per minute
Example: A waterfall 50 cm wide requires approximately 75 litres per minute, or 4,500 litres per hour, delivered at its operating head. The flow you need also depends on the appearance you want.
Allow for hose and fitting resistance. OASE's chart guidance assumes approximately 5 metres of 38 mm (1½-inch) hose, with a stated pressure-loss allowance of around 0.15 metres of water head. Actual losses vary with flow, hose diameter, length, bends and other equipment.
A pump's maximum advertised flow is not the flow it will deliver at the top of your waterfall. Longer or narrower hoses, filters and extra fittings can reduce the delivered flow. Contact us if your installation differs from the chart assumptions.
