Pump fed versus gravity fed filtration systems
Gravity fed system
The filter system is completely buried (filter pit). The inlet opening is located beneath the water level of the pond. The dirty pond water enters the drum filter unit via bottom drains or skimmers and then flows into the downstream pump chamber. The water level balances out in the filter chambers to the level of the pond. A pump, in the pump chamber, pumps the clean water back into the pond.
Advantages of the gravity fed system:
Excellent movement and thus effective removal of suspended particles using the principle of gravity
Energy efficient due to negligible height differences and low frictional losses
Can be unobtrusively integrated in a water garden
UVC clarifiers can be connected in series downstream and are subject to less soiling.
Perfectly tailored to the AquaMax Eco filter pump from OASE
There are basically 2 ways to install this gravity system. The best way is to use the ProfiClear Premium Individual Module which is a module box that conects to the Premium Compact in series. The pump and the UV go inside the ProfiClear Premium Individual Module (pump chamber.) Water then leaves via a 110mm pipe to return to the pond. Or you could use an Aquamax Eco Premium in the pump chamber feeding a 1 1/2" hose to the UV and then to the pond.
Alternatively you can fit an adaptor on the 110mm outlet to change this to a 50mm. This can then be attached to a dry mounted pump, like the Oase Aquamax , and the water then pumped through a UV and back to the pond via a hose.
Ideal for Koi ponds of up to 22,000 litres (4,850 gallons), goldfish ponds of up to 44,000 litres (9,700 gallons) and nature ponds of up to 88,000 litres (19,400 gallons).
Pump fed system
The filter system must be installed above the water level of the pond. A filter pump pumps the dirty pond water out of the pond into the filter system. The clean water is returned to the pond through a pipe via gravity.
A Bitron C UV or a Bitron Eco UV can be mounted on the inlet to effectively clump together the algae before it enters the drum.
Advantages of the pump fed system:
Minimal installation work required
System can be easily extended
Simple upstream connection of Ultra violet clarifier increases effectiveness to effectively clump together the algae before it enters the drum.
Perfectly tailored to the AquaMax Eco Premium filter pump from OASE
To choose a complete filtration system this filter requires a filtration pump, oxygenator and uv.
How to choose a pump flow rate for Oase Proficlear Premium Compact systems.
- For Koi ponds , the pump capacity per hour = pond volume / 1.5 eg for a 35,000 litre Koi pond , pump flow rate required is 35000/1.5 requires a 23,333 litre per hour pump
- For fish ponds , the pump capacity per hour = pond volume /4
- For natural ponds, the pump capacity per hour = pond volume / 8
How to choose uv power for your Oase Proficlear Premium Compact systems.
- For Koi ponds , 4 watts per thousand litres, eg a 25000 litre Koi pond should have 25 x 4 = 100 watts eg Bitron 110w
- For fish ponds , 2 watts per thousand litres
- For natural ponds, 1 watts per thousand litres
Recommended Aeration pump.
In order to keep the moving bed moving an air pump is required. We recommend the Oase AquaOxy 2000 air pump. Tip: we find it best to reduce, by 50%, the output air flow for first week of operation in order for bacteria to colonise the filter media.
Drum Filter MODEL COMPARISION.
Oase manufacture 4 different drum filter systems that combine drum filter and moving bed filter in a single box.
